The Black Ferns have announced their starting lineup for the upcoming quarterfinal match against South Africa in the 2025 Rugby World Cup. The highly anticipated clash will take place on September 14, 2025, at Sandy Park in Exeter, and promises to be a thrilling encounter.
Head coach Allan Bunting has made strategic selections, welcoming back loose forward Kaipo Olsen-Baker and centre Amy du Plessis, both of whom return from injuries sustained during the pool stage. Their experience will be crucial as the Black Ferns aim to advance in the tournament.
In the starting lineup, Veisinia Mahutariki-Fakalelu takes the position of tighthead prop, joining loosehead prop Chryss Viliko and hooker Georgia Ponsonby. The second row features Maiakawanakaulani Roos and Alana Bremner, while the loose forward trio includes Liana Mikaele-Tu’u, Jorja Miller, and Olsen-Baker.
The backline sees halfback Maia Joseph partnering with co-captain Ruahei Demant. The midfield is bolstered by veteran players Theresa Setefano and Stacey Waaka. On the wings, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe joins Braxton Sorensen-McGee, who is currently the tournament’s top point scorer with 38 points, following impressive performances against Ireland and Japan.
Completing the starting fifteen is fullback Renee Holmes, who has been in excellent form. The bench is filled with strong options, including Atlanta Lolohea, Awhina Tangen-Wainohu, Kate Henwood, Laura Bayfield, co-captain Kennedy Tukuafu, Iritana Hohaia, du Plessis, and Ayesha Leti-I’iga.
Bunting emphasized the importance of this match, stating, “This match against South Africa means a lot to us; it’s a final. We are also aware of what this game means to South Africa. We have selected our strongest available 23.” He also acknowledged the support from fans and families, saying, “We feel and appreciate the continuous support for our wāhine.”
