Black Ferns Prepare for Rugby World Cup Title Defense in August

The Black Ferns are gearing up to defend their title at the Rugby World Cup, set to commence in August 2024. The squad will feature 16 players from their triumphant campaign in 2022, showcasing a blend of seasoned talent and fresh faces eager to make their mark on the international stage.
Central to the team’s leadership are co-captains Kennedy Tukuafu and Ruahei Demant. Their experience and motivational prowess will be crucial as the team navigates the pressures of defending their championship. The Black Ferns will also rely on the skills of Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, who holds the record as the top try scorer in World Cup history, having netted 10 tries in her last two test matches following her return from retirement earlier this year.
New Faces Join the Squad
The squad’s lineup includes notable newcomers, such as Jorja Miller, who received the Kel Tremain Memorial Medal for her outstanding performance. Alongside her, Kaipo Olsen-Baker, the 2024 Black Ferns Player of the Year, joins the ranks. Olsen-Baker’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy; had it not been for an injury, she would have been part of the 2022 World Cup team.
Three halfbacks are set to make their World Cup debuts, adding an exciting dynamic to the squad. Risaleaana Pouri-Lane, a star in the Black Ferns Sevens team, will compete for the starting position alongside Iritana Hohaia and Maia Joseph. Their performances in the lead-up to the tournament will be critical, as the team looks to solidify their strategy and roster.
As the Black Ferns prepare for this highly anticipated event, their combination of experience and youthful energy may prove pivotal. With a strong foundation built on past successes, the defending champions are determined to rise to the occasion and showcase their prowess on the world stage once again.
