Black Ferns Revamp Squad for Rugby World Cup Opener Against Spain

The Black Ferns have made significant changes to their lineup ahead of their Rugby World Cup opener against Spain, scheduled for Monday morning. The coaching staff has introduced a blend of experience and returning players, aiming for a strong start in the tournament.
In total, there are 11 changes to the match-day 23 that triumphed over Australia in Wellington, the team’s final game before the World Cup. Notable inclusions are halfback Maia Joseph, centre Amy du Plessis, and outside backs Ayesha Leti-I’iga and Braxton Sorensen-McGee, all of whom have recovered from injuries. Additionally, Kaipo Olsen-Baker will contribute from the bench, adding depth to the squad.
Experienced Players Lead the Charge
Veteran playmaker Kelly Brazier will kick off her fourth World Cup campaign in the pivotal five-eighth position, teaming up with Joseph. This marks a significant moment for Brazier, as it has been nearly four years since she last started for the Black Ferns. In the midfield, Theresa Setefano will celebrate her 20th Test appearance alongside Du Plessis, while Leti-I’iga and Sorensen-McGee aim to inject speed and agility from the wings. Completing the back line is fullback Renee Holmes.
The front row features Vici-Rose Green as the anchor, supported by props Awhina Tangen-Wainohu and Amy Rule. Co-captain Alana Bremner steps up in the absence of Kennedy Tukuafu, marking her 30th Test match alongside her sister Chelsea Bremner in the lock positions. The loose forwards will see Layla Sae and Jorja Miller starting, while Liana Mikaele-Tu’u celebrates her own milestone in the No. 8 jersey.
The bench boasts a wealth of experience with the likes of Georgia Ponsonby, Chryss Viliko, and Tanya Kalounivale, providing forward cover alongside recent debutant Laura Bayfield. Playmakers Ruahei Demant and Risaleaana Pouri-Lane, as well as winger Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, round out the reinforcements.
Team Prepared for World Cup Challenge
Head coach Allan Bunting expressed confidence in the squad’s preparations, noting that the team has settled well in England. He anticipates a strong start to their title defense, stating, “It’s going to be an absolute honour for our wāhine to walk out on that field and really stamp their mark.” The Black Ferns last faced Spain in 1998, securing a decisive victory with a score of 46-3 during a Rugby World Cup pool match in Amsterdam.
As the Black Ferns prepare for this crucial encounter, the combination of returning talent and seasoned players is expected to create a formidable team dynamic. The match against Spain is set to commence at 09:00 GMT on October 16, 2023, marking the beginning of the Black Ferns’ quest to defend their World Cup title.
