Canterbury Edges Out Counties Manukau in Thrilling NPC Quarter-Final

Canterbury secured a dramatic 20-15 victory over Counties Manukau in the quarter-finals of the National Provincial Championship (NPC), advancing to the semifinals against Hawke’s Bay on March 30, 2024. The match, held in Christchurch, showcased Canterbury’s resilience as they overcame a ten-point deficit at halftime to clinch the win in extra time.

The game began with Counties Manukau taking an early lead through a penalty goal from Gibson Popoalii. Canterbury responded with a try from Jamie Hannah, but Counties quickly countered with two tries from Popoalii and Ioane Moananu, ending the first half with a score of 15-5.

Canterbury regrouped during the second half. They narrowed the gap with a penalty goal, followed by a converted try from Braydon Ennor, leveling the score at 15-15 as the match approached its final stages. Opportunities arose for Canterbury to secure the win in regulation time, but attempts from Chay Fihaki and Andrew Knewstubb fell short, pushing the match into extra time.

The extra period saw Canterbury display their championship character. In the 87th minute, Fihaki scored a pivotal try, followed by a penalty goal in the 94th minute, sealing the match. “That was a hell of an effort from everyone,” said Canterbury captain Tom Christie in a post-match interview with Sky Sport. “They threw it at us and we just had to front. Extremely proud to go 100 minutes, but we’ve got to do it all again next week.”

Canterbury’s victory not only secures their place in the semifinals but also marks a significant achievement given their earlier struggles this season. They will host Hawke’s Bay next Saturday, while Otago faces Bay of Plenty on March 29, 2024, in the other semifinal. This match marks a disappointing end to the season for Counties Manukau, who, despite losing their first five matches, had made it to the quarter-finals.

“Man, it was hard to let them go away, but I’m just super proud of this group,” said Counties captain Jimmy Tupou. “Pretty disappointed, mate, but we can walk off with our heads held high.”
