Developers Discuss Creative Journey Behind Ghost of Yotei
The much-anticipated game, Ghost of Yotei, has officially launched for PlayStation 5, captivating players with its stunning landscapes and intricate storytelling. In a recent interview, co-creative director Nate Fox discussed the challenges and inspirations that shaped the sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima.
Fox described the intense pressure that comes with creating a sequel to a beloved game. He emphasized the need to maintain the core aspects of the original while exploring new thematic and geographical territories. “It’s a gift to be able to make a game that resonates with people,” he noted. The team focused on elements like “lethal precision in combat” and a beautifully crafted world set in Japan.
The choice of Hokkaido as the game’s setting was intentional. While Tsushima is a relatively unknown location to many, Hokkaido offers a rich cultural backdrop that had not been explored in modern gaming. Fox expressed excitement about showcasing this region, stating, “It leverages all of our skill sets of creating a beautiful landscape but magnifies it by 20.”
The developers undertook extensive research to respect and accurately portray the Ainu people, the indigenous inhabitants of northern Japan. Initially, they lacked consultants from this community, which led to a steep learning curve. Fox acknowledged the responsibility felt towards the Ainu culture and described the valuable experiences gained while interacting with them, including foraging for food and visiting their museum. “They invited us into their home,” he said, emphasizing the importance of creating a respectful representation in the game.
Exploration plays a significant role in Ghost of Yotei. Players can venture around the crater of Mount Yotei, engaging in scenic moments even without mission goals. This design philosophy highlights the balance between action and tranquility, a core principle that Fox and his team wanted to achieve. “We want to create a mature tone, balancing the violent nature of samurai warfare with beauty,” he explained.
The game also draws on historical events while weaving in elements of fantasy. Fox discussed the importance of grounding the narrative in reality, using actual locations and events for inspiration. For instance, Matsumae Castle, which they visited, provided key visual cues for the game. “We leaned on these elements while also allowing for pure fiction,” he said.
The development team has applied lessons learned from the success of Ghost of Tsushima. The first game’s popularity allowed for greater resource allocation and a focus on creating varied content. Fox noted that they doubled the variety of side content, taking into account players’ tendencies to spend considerable time exploring every aspect of the game’s world.
The new game also incorporates innovative features of the PlayStation 5 controller, enhancing player engagement. Fox credited the inspiration from the game Astrobot, highlighting its creative use of controller functions.
When asked about the backlash regarding the introduction of a female protagonist, Fox reflected on the challenges of fan expectations. He described the creative freedom the team has enjoyed, stating, “We’ve been given the trust to explore creating stories and worlds.” He noted that the themes of revenge and the complexities surrounding them are central to the game’s narrative.
As for personal reflections on the themes of vengeance, Fox concluded, “If you’re hell-bent on revenge in such a stunningly beautiful landscape, you might change. It’s too beautiful not to.”
Ghost of Yotei is now available, inviting players to immerse themselves in a visually stunning and culturally rich experience.
