England Ends 15-Year Ashes Test Losing Streak Against Australia
England’s cricket team celebrated a significant victory on March 15, 2024, breaking a 15-year losing streak against Australia in Ashes Tests. The win, secured at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), marks England’s first Test triumph in Australia since the 2010/11 series, when they won by an innings and 83 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Although the series had already been decided in favor of Australia, England’s performance provided much-needed excitement for their traveling supporters. Facing a challenging situation at 165 for six, England managed to secure victory with crucial contributions from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. The winning run came via four leg byes off Australian bowler Mitchell Starc, highlighting the tension of the match.
Match Highlights and Key Performances
England began the second day on the back foot, with paceman Gus Atkinson sidelined due to a hamstring strain. Australia had resumed play with a 46-run lead and ten wickets in hand. Despite this setback, the visitors capitalized on a bowler-friendly pitch and some questionable batting from Australia, which led to the hosts being dismissed for just 132 runs in 34.3 overs during the second session.
England’s top order, which had struggled throughout the series, showed resilience. Zak Crawley (37 runs) and Ben Duckett (34 runs) set the pace with a rapid 51-run partnership, scoring at more than seven runs per over before Duckett was dismissed by Starc. The decision to promote tailender Brydon Carse to number three did not achieve the desired result, as he fell for just six runs.
Joe Root, England’s experienced batter, expressed mixed feelings after the victory. “To lose the series is obviously very disappointing, but I think it was really important that we showed a lot of character for the rest of the series,” he stated. Root’s dismissal for 15 runs added to the pressure on England, leaving them just ten runs from victory with only four wickets remaining.
As the match progressed, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith (three not out) and Brook (18 not out) held their nerve, ultimately guiding England to a historic win.
Australia’s Decline and Match Aftermath
Australia’s batting lineup, which had shown promise at times, faltered dramatically. After reaching 61 for two wickets in the morning session, they quickly collapsed. England’s Josh Tongue played a pivotal role in turning the tide, taking a crucial wicket by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne. This sparked a rapid decline, with Australia losing four wickets for just 27 runs, leaving them at 98 for six by lunchtime.
Steve Smith (24 not out) and Cameron Green (19) attempted to stabilize the innings with a brief partnership of 31 runs before Stokes intervened, prompting Green into a loose shot that was caught in the slips. The Australian tail was unable to withstand the pressure, contributing only 13 runs for their last three wickets.
The two-day match in Perth has drawn attention not only for the cricket but also for its financial implications. With a massive crowd of 92,045 on day two, the attendance nearly surpassed the day one record of 94,199. The MCG is set for another sell-out on day three, which raises concerns for Cricket Australia regarding lost revenue from a match that concluded in such a short time frame.
England’s victory, while not altering the series outcome, stands as a testament to their resilience and character in the face of adversity. As they look forward to future contests, this win may serve as a catalyst for rebuilding confidence and performance on the international stage.
