First Five Withdraws from $600,000 Ōtaki-Māori Classic Race
New Zealand’s renowned sprinter, First Five, will not compete in the upcoming $600,000 Ōtaki-Māori Classic at Ellerslie, as confirmed by his trainer, David Greene. The decision comes after First Five’s impressive victory in the BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at his home track in Te Rapa last Saturday, marking his second consecutive Group 1 win following his triumph at the Telegraph on January 3.
Greene had originally planned to extend First Five’s distance to 1600m for the upcoming race. However, he concluded that a two-week recovery period would be insufficient for the five-year-old sprinter. “Two weeks would have been a tight back-up for him,” Greene stated. He emphasized that First Five tends to perform better when his races are spaced out, suggesting a more strategic approach to his training and competition schedule.
By opting to give First Five a quieter two weeks, Greene aims to prepare the sprinter for a significant autumn race instead. He expressed optimism about First Five’s future performances, saying, “He hopefully has a lot more to come in his future, so we will look after him.”
First Five’s recent successes have solidified his status as one of the top sprinting talents in New Zealand. The decision to withdraw from the Ōtaki-Māori Classic reflects a careful consideration of the horse’s long-term potential and well-being. As fans and followers of the sport await his next appearance, Greene’s approach underscores the importance of balancing competitive ambitions with the health of the athlete.
In the competitive world of horse racing, such decisions are crucial, and Greene’s focus on First Five’s future performance is a testament to his commitment to the horse’s career. With more races on the horizon, the equine star’s next steps will be closely monitored by trainers, owners, and enthusiasts alike.
