Former All Blacks loose forward Dr. Keith Nelson has died at the age of 86. Nelson, who played 18 matches for the All Blacks from 1962 to 1964, including two test matches against Australia, was recognized as All Black No. 631. His contributions to rugby and dentistry have left a lasting impact on both fields.
A Career in Rugby and Dentistry
After retiring from professional rugby, Nelson established a dental practice, Keith Nelson & Associates, in Glen Eden, where he served the community for more than 40 years. His commitment to his patients and the sport remained strong throughout his life. For over two decades, he was the official dentist for Eden Park, ensuring that players received proper dental care during first-class matches.
Nelson not only treated injuries but also crafted custom mouthguards for both Auckland and All Blacks players, demonstrating his dedication to athlete safety. His dual career as a dentist and former professional rugby player made him a respected figure in both the sports and medical communities.
Tributes from the Rugby Community
The news of Nelson’s passing was confirmed in a social media post from his practice on Thursday. Auckland Rugby also released a statement expressing condolences, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sport and the community. Many former teammates and players have shared their memories of Nelson, highlighting his warmth and commitment to rugby.
As the rugby community mourns the loss of this dedicated athlete and professional, Nelson’s legacy will continue to influence future generations in both rugby and dentistry. His remarkable journey from the rugby field to the dental chair exemplifies the spirit of dedication and service to others.
