Former All Black Dr. Keith Nelson Passes Away at 86

Former All Blacks loose forward Dr. Keith Nelson has passed away at the age of 86. Nelson, who played 18 matches for the All Blacks between 1962 and 1964, represented the team as All Black No. 631. His contributions to rugby and dentistry left a lasting impact on both fields.
Born in New Zealand, Nelson made his mark on the rugby world during a time of fierce competition. He participated in two test matches against Australia, showcasing his skills as a loose forward. After retiring from professional rugby, he dedicated his life to dentistry, founding Keith Nelson & Associates in Glen Eden, where he practiced for more than 40 years.
A Legacy Beyond Rugby
Nelson did not just leave his mark on the field; he was also a significant figure in the dental community. For over two decades, he served as the official dentist for Eden Park, the iconic stadium in Auckland. His role included providing dental care at every first-class match and hand-crafting mouthguards for players from Auckland and the All Blacks.
The announcement of Nelson’s passing was confirmed on social media by Keith Nelson & Associates on March 15, 2024, prompting a statement from Auckland Rugby expressing their condolences. The organization acknowledged his dual contributions to both rugby and health, highlighting how he was a beloved figure in the community.
Nelson’s influence extended beyond his professional life. He was known for his dedication to helping young athletes and promoting dental health. His legacy will be remembered by those who played alongside him and the countless patients he treated over the years.
As the rugby community mourns his loss, Nelson’s family, friends, and former teammates reflect on a life well-lived, marked by passion for sport and a commitment to improving the well-being of others.
