Former Cricketer Damien Martyn Hospitalized in Induced Coma
Former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn has been hospitalized and placed in an induced coma due to a serious bout of meningitis. The 54-year-old right-hand batter’s condition has raised concerns among fans and former teammates alike, with Nine Newspapers reporting the situation on March 15, 2024.
Messages of support have flooded social media, with former test teammate Darren Lehmann expressing his well-wishes on Twitter. “Lots of love and prayers sending @damienmartyn way. Keep strong and fighting, legend. Love to the family,” he wrote. Similarly, former test bowler Rodney Hogg described Martyn’s hospitalization as “shocking news” during a segment on 6PR radio, adding, “We wish him all the best.” Veteran sports broadcaster Jim Wilson also conveyed his support for Martyn, further highlighting the impact of the news within the cricket community.
Martyn’s illustrious career in cricket is marked by his exceptional skill and remarkable achievements. He scored an impressive average of 46.37 with the bat across 67 test matches for Australia, making him a prominent figure in the sport. Born in Darwin, Australia, he made his test debut at the young age of 21, stepping in for the late Dean Jones during the 1992/93 home series against the West Indies. By age 23, he had already taken on the role of captain for Western Australia.
One of Martyn’s career highlights came in 2005 when he achieved a high score of 165 against New Zealand, contributing to his total of 13 test centuries for Australia. His final test appearance occurred at Adelaide Oval during the 2006/07 Ashes series. Beyond his playing days, Martyn also ventured into commentary, sharing his insights on the game.
In addition to his test cricket achievements, Martyn played 208 One Day Internationals (ODIs), with an impressive average of 40.8. He was part of the Australian squad that triumphed in the 2003 World Cup, where he scored an unbeaten 88 in the final match against India, solidifying his legacy in Australian cricket.
