Kelvin Gutsell Claims World Title at Skeet Championships
Kelvin Gutsell, a member of the Mataura Gun Club, has achieved remarkable success at the World Skeet Championships held in San Antonio, Texas, from September 26 to October 4, 2023. Competing against top shooters from around the globe, Gutsell showcased his exceptional skills by successfully hitting 591 out of 600 targets, earning him the title of the best skeet veteran in the world for his age category.
The championship featured four distinct categories and gauges, with Gutsell demonstrating his versatility by switching gauges throughout the competition. The intensity of the event was marked by the challenging double sections, which required him to swiftly aim and fire at twice the number of targets. Competing under the intense Texas sun, with temperatures soaring between 35°C and 40°C, Gutsell faced conditions that were markedly different from his usual training environment in Mataura.
Mental Fortitude in Competition
Gutsell attributes a significant portion of his success to mental management rather than solely relying on physical skill. “Clay target shooting, 80% of it is mental management,” he explained. “The rest is training, practice, fitness, but you’ve got to be focused and concentrating. You’re giving your absolute focus for about 10, 15 seconds.”
He emphasized the importance of pre-shot rituals and maintaining a positive mindset throughout the competition. Gutsell stated, “Whatever happens, whatever result, it’s fine. If you miss one, it’s fine. Your mental preparation overcomes any negative thoughts. You just move on and prepare yourself for the next one. You can’t do anything about it.”
These mental strategies proved effective as Gutsell navigated the demanding schedule of the championships, where targets flew continuously and the pressure was palpable.
Future Competitions on the Horizon
With his world title secured, Gutsell is now set to represent New Zealand in upcoming competitions. The next challenge is the Glen Trophy, where he will compete against the Australian team in what he describes as a high-level competition. Gutsell remains focused and determined, ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead in his shooting career.
As he prepares for this next event, one thing is certain: if Kelvin Gutsell is on the firing line, it is a difficult day for clay targets.
