Kiwi Boxer David Nyika Wins for Fiancée Battling Cancer
Kiwis are celebrating as boxer David Nyika dedicated his recent victory to his fiancée, Lexy Thornberry, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Nyika secured a unanimous points decision against Chinese opponent Wuzhati Nuerlang at a local venue in Gatton, Queensland, on the evening of October 14, 2023.
This win marks an important milestone in Nyika’s professional career, improving his record to 12 wins and 1 loss. It also represents his second consecutive victory since a challenging bout in January 2023, where he faced a knockout defeat against Jai Opetaia for the world title on the Gold Coast. While the fight showcased Nyika’s skills, he admitted it was not the statement performance he had hoped for.
Personal Struggles and Motivation
Nyika’s motivation was clear throughout the match, as he fought not only for his career but also for his fiancée, who could not attend due to her health condition. Thornberry, 24, is the daughter of his trainer and recently began chemotherapy for head and neck cancer. After the fight, an emotional Nyika expressed his love and admiration for her. “Lexy, I love you. You have been my inspiration, you have been my source of strength and courage. We’ll get through this together,” he stated, visibly moved.
Despite dominating the fight, Nyika faced a resilient Nuerlang, who proved tougher than expected. The Chinese boxer displayed commendable endurance, making it through all ten rounds despite suffering multiple cuts. Nyika’s superior speed and technique allowed him to land numerous strikes, but he struggled to deliver the decisive combinations that could have finished the fight.
Reflections on the Match
All three judges scored the bout in favor of Nyika, awarding him every round. However, he acknowledged the effort Nuerlang put forth. “The last six weeks have been hell,” Nyika confessed, highlighting the emotional toll of his personal life alongside his boxing career. “To the Thornberry family putting this event together, this is for Gatton. It’s important for me to go home now and appreciate my woman.”
Nyika’s victory, while satisfying, may not have solidified his standing in the competitive cruiserweight division. He recognizes the need for more impactful performances as he aims to regain prominence in his category. Nevertheless, his ability to endure a full ten rounds against a determined opponent illustrates his potential for growth.
As Nyika moves forward, he carries with him a dual focus: pursuing his boxing aspirations while supporting Thornberry through her challenging health journey. The compassion he shows both inside and outside the ring serves as a testament to his character as an athlete and partner.
