New Zealand athlete George Beamish has successfully qualified for the final of the 3000m steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, despite a dramatic fall during his heat. The event unfolded dramatically when a fellow competitor inadvertently stepped on Beamish’s face, but he managed to recover and finish second in his heat.

Beamish, 28, initially fell during the final lap after leading the nine-runner field. Following the incident, Canadian runner Jean-Simon Desgagnés also stumbled, unable to avoid the fallen Beamish. Remarkably, Beamish quickly regained his composure and rejoined the race, closing in on the leaders with just 300 meters remaining.

With a strong final push, Beamish surged into second place, finishing with a time of 8:27.23—just 0.02 seconds behind Moroccan heat winner Salaheddine Ben Yazide. This performance secured him a spot in the final scheduled for early Tuesday morning (12:55 AM NZT).

In reflecting on the incident, Beamish downplayed the physical aftermath, noting only a few scratches. “I tried to make a responsible move to the front and not leave it until the last few steps, and ended up on the ground,” he stated. His determination was evident as he added, “I wasn’t going to let a tumble put paid to a couple of years of waiting for another final.”

Beamish’s experience at the Paris Olympics earlier this year weighed on his mind during the race. He finished seventh in his steeplechase heat there, falling short of the top-five finish needed to advance to the final. “I wasn’t able to show what I felt like I was going to be capable of in Paris and I didn’t want to wait another bloody two years, so yeah, I got up quick,” he expressed.

With his strong performance in Tokyo, Beamish has positioned himself among the elite competitors heading into the final. His resilience and quick recovery demonstrate his commitment to achieving success on the world stage.

As the final approaches, fans and supporters will be eager to see if Beamish can capitalize on this moment and deliver an inspiring performance, building on his recent gold medal at the indoor championships last year.
