Lee Zeltwanger Eyes Championship Glory in Toyota 86 Trophy Series

Lee Zeltwanger is poised for a significant weekend as he leads the points standings in the inaugural Toyota 86 Trophy Series at Taupo International Motorsport Park on March 9-10, 2024. With only two races remaining, Zeltwanger has established a commanding 60-point lead over his closest competitor. His performances throughout the four-round winter series have been exceptional, matching the experienced drivers from the Bridgestone GR86 Championship, namely Harry Townshend and Ajay Giddy.
This weekend’s races are crucial, not just for the championship title but also for the lucrative prizes at stake. The overall winner will receive a free lease of a GR86, supported by CareVets, as well as technical assistance from a championship-winning engineer and mechanic. The runner-up will benefit from a free lease of a vehicle from TGRNZ, while the third-place driver will secure entry fees and tyres for the upcoming 2024-25 Bridgestone GR86 Championship season.
Zeltwanger’s lead places him firmly in the spotlight, but he will need to keep an eye on Townshend and Giddy, both of whom have secured wins and multiple podium finishes in the series thus far. Although they are ineligible for the Trophy Series prizes, their competitive spirit means they will aim to add to their individual win tallies this weekend.
As the series progresses, rookie driver Mitch Vye will make his debut at Taupo. Vye represents the Right Karts Academy, which previously showed strong performances in last season’s Bridgestone GR86 Championship. His ability to match the pace of summer series drivers could make him a dark horse in the final races.
Completing the field are Nathan Grammer and Toby Elmiger, both seeking to conclude their campaigns on a high note with Mackenzie Motorsport and Action Motorsport, respectively. As the weekend approaches, all eyes will be on the track as these competitors vie for victory and the coveted prizes.
The Toyota 86 Trophy Series has captured attention for its exciting races and the opportunity it provides for young drivers to showcase their talent. With the championship on the line, the atmosphere at Taupo International Motorsport Park is set to be electric. Fans and supporters alike will look forward to witnessing the fierce competition as Zeltwanger aims to secure his place in motorsport history.
