Liam Lawson Reflects on Challenges of Formula 1 Rookie Season

New Zealand driver Liam Lawson has navigated a tumultuous start to his 2025 Formula 1 season, emphasizing the importance of surrounding himself with supportive individuals. After beginning the year with the prestigious Red Bull Racing team, Lawson’s tenure at the top team was short-lived, lasting just two races before he was reassigned to the junior Racing Bulls team.
Lawson, 23, has faced both highs and lows throughout the season, grappling with the intense pressure that comes with competing in one of the world’s premier motorsport series. “We get introduced to it in Formula 2, though it is nowhere near the level of Formula 1,” Lawson explained. “The main thing with Formula 1 is the longer you spend in it, the more you get used to it.”
Adjusting to the Pressure
The mental challenges of Formula 1 have proved to be significant for Lawson. He noted the overwhelming pressure and constant noise surrounding the sport, stating that maintaining a solid support network has been crucial for his mental well-being. “I’ve had a performance coach since I was quite young when I first moved to Europe at 16,” he revealed. “People I trust help ensure that I’m not going too far off track in what I should be doing or thinking.”
Lawson acknowledged that the mental aspect of racing may be the toughest part of the sport. “Dealing with the pressure, a lot of media scrutiny, and even pressure from within the team is challenging,” he shared. “Trying to perform under pressure is something we focus on a lot.” He emphasized the need to stay grounded, especially after both good and bad weekends.
Currently, Racing Bulls sits in seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship. Lawson is determined to improve the team’s standings, aiming to catch Williams for fifth place. “Results and points are crucial; for us, it’s extremely close,” he noted. Lawson is currently in 15th position in the drivers’ standings, with 20 points to his name.
Future Goals and Managing Expectations
As he prepares for the upcoming race in Azerbaijan, Lawson understands the need for consistent performance. He has not scored points in his last two races and recognizes that a top-ten finish is essential to silence critics and prove his capabilities. “There is so much talk and rumors in the sport that I am learning to ignore as much as possible,” he explained.
Lawson is committed to focusing on the driving and performance aspects of the sport, stating, “I think it is easy to get lost in everything else.” With the support of his team and trusted advisors, he aims to regain momentum in the second half of the season and continue his growth as a driver in Formula 1.
