Phillips Shines with Both Hands in Volts’ Victory Over Stags
The Otago Volts secured an impressive victory over the Central Stags in the Super Smash match held on March 15, 2024, in Alexandra. Led by a stunning performance from Glenn Phillips, who scored an unbeaten 90 runs off just 48 balls, the Volts triumphed by 41 runs, finishing with a total of 193 for seven in their 20 overs.
Volts captain Luke Georgeson won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that paid off as his team made a solid start. Openers Llew Johnson and Jamal Todd set the momentum, with Johnson scoring 13 off nine balls and Todd contributing an entertaining 32 runs off 16. Their efforts helped the Volts reach 80 for three wickets at one point, establishing a strong foundation for Phillips to unleash his batting prowess.
Phillips began his innings cautiously, taking his time to settle in before accelerating in the final overs. He reached his half-century in just 32 balls and finished the innings with a flourish. Notably, in the 17th over, he hit Toby Findlay for a sequence of boundaries—4, 6, 4, and 4—demonstrating his explosive batting style.
As the match progressed, Phillips showcased his versatility by switching to a left-handed grip, adding another layer of excitement to his innings. His remarkable hitting included a spectacular six off former teammate Dean Foxcroft and a breathtaking shot over cover off offspinner Jayden Lennox that left the crowd in awe.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Phillips stated, “A couple of partnerships set us up… and to finish it off nicely was good.” His contributions were pivotal in ensuring the Volts set a formidable target for the Stags.
In response, the Central Stags began their innings with promise, particularly through opening batter Will Young, who struck three sixes and five fours in a brisk 40 runs off 19 balls. At one stage, the Stags looked capable of chasing the total, reaching 87 for two after 10 overs with both Foxcroft and Dane Cleaver at the crease. However, the loss of both players, each scoring 24 off 19 balls and falling to Georgeson, significantly hindered their progress.
Georgeson’s bowling performance was a highlight, as he secured four wickets for just 23 runs in his four overs. He was well-supported by Danru Ferns, who took two wickets for 24 runs. The Stags ultimately finished their innings at 152 for eight, falling short of the target despite batting through their overs.
The Volts are set to face a new challenge as Phillips departs for India with the Black Caps, but he remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. “The guys are learning really fast… I think they’ve got everything they need to move forward,” he noted, praising the team’s dynamics and effort.
This match not only showcased the talent within the Otago Volts but also highlighted the competitive spirit of the Super Smash tournament, promising exciting matches ahead as teams aim for T20 glory.
