Phoenix Women Draw 2-2 with Brisbane Roar in Thrilling Finish
The Wellington Phoenix women’s team extended their unbeaten run to three matches after securing a dramatic 2-2 draw against Brisbane Roar on March 15, 2024. A late goal from Brooke Nunn in stoppage time salvaged a point for the Phoenix, following impressive victories over Sydney FC (7-0) and Western Sydney (3-0) in their previous outings.
Phoenix coach Bev Priestman expressed satisfaction with the outcome despite the team dropping one place to sixth in the standings. “If you’d asked me at the beginning of the game, I’d say no, but at the end, I’m very happy to take the point,” Priestman said. “Whenever you take points on the road, you have to be happy.”
The match began with Manaia Elliott putting the visitors ahead in the 15th minute with a long-range strike. However, Brisbane responded quickly, equalizing shortly after and taking the lead before the half-hour mark. It seemed the Phoenix would leave Brisbane empty-handed until Nunn’s crucial intervention in the eighth minute of added time.
Team Resilience Shines Through
Priestman highlighted the team’s determination, noting their ability to fight until the very end. “Sometimes the best teams cannot be at their best and still take points on the road,” she remarked. “To get back-to-back points away and to remain undefeated in three games is something we need to be proud of.”
The Phoenix struggled in the first half, adjusting to Brisbane’s tactical changes. Priestman acknowledged their improved performance in the second half, stating, “We did a much better job of preventing any shots.” The team’s resilience was on full display as they pushed for an equalizer, culminating in Nunn’s decisive goal that slipped past Roar goalkeeper Lincoln at her near post.
Looking ahead, the Phoenix are preparing for a home match against Melbourne City this Saturday. However, they may be without key player Sabitra “Samba” Bhandari, who sustained a knee injury late in the game. “We’re not sure yet. I think she’ll definitely need to get a scan on her knee,” Priestman noted. “It could be nothing, but it also could be something we need to look into.”
As the Phoenix continue their campaign, the draw against Brisbane Roar serves as a reminder of their fighting spirit, setting the stage for an exciting matchup against Melbourne City.
