Selwyn Launches Unique Monopoly Game to Fund Youth Initiatives
The Selwyn Youth Council has partnered with game manufacturer Hasbro to create a special edition of Monopoly that celebrates the unique characteristics of the Selwyn district in New Zealand. The game will serve as a fundraiser to support youth and community initiatives throughout the area.
A central aspect of this project is community engagement, allowing residents to contribute ideas that will shape the board. Bella Thompson, a member of the youth council, emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, “This board is all about celebrating Selwyn and giving our community a chance to have their say.” She added, “We want everyone, from tamariki to rangatahi and their wider whānau, to share their ideas on what makes our towns special. It’s a fun, creative way to showcase our district while fundraising to support future youth projects.”
The response to this initiative has been overwhelmingly positive, with nearly 200 submissions received at recent youth events held over the past two weekends. This strong community interest reflects a desire to highlight local culture and landmarks. Several locations across New Zealand have previously launched their custom Monopoly boards, including Christchurch, Wellington, Southland, Wanaka, Queenstown, and Dunedin.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The Selwyn Youth Council plans to remain active at various events throughout the summer, collecting additional ideas for the Monopoly board. This engagement is designed not only to foster community spirit but also to ensure that the final product resonates with local residents.
By involving the community in this way, the council aims to promote a sense of ownership and pride among residents. The finished game is expected to not only provide entertainment but also to serve as a lasting tribute to what makes Selwyn distinctive.
As the project develops, the youth council is committed to keeping the community informed and involved. Plans for the official launch of the Selwyn Monopoly game will be announced in the coming months, with proceeds directed towards supporting initiatives that benefit local youth and the wider community.
In creating this custom edition of Monopoly, the Selwyn Youth Council not only aims to raise funds but also to create a fun and engaging way to connect with the community, showcasing the special qualities that make Selwyn a vibrant place to live.
