Shannon Drake Faces Three-Month Ban for Cannabis Use
A two-time champion of the South Island Golden Gloves, Shannon Drake, has received a three-month sanction following a positive test for cannabis use. The boxer, hailing from Timaru and currently in his early 20s, tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) during the South Island Golden Gloves competition held on June 1, 2025.
The ruling, announced by the Sports Integrity Commission, indicated that Drake conceded to using cannabis recreationally. The commission clarified that the use of cannabis occurred out of competition and was not connected to his athletic performance.
This incident comes after Drake successfully claimed victory in the 75kg Elite Open final of the 2025 South Island Golden Gloves. In addition to his successes in the South Island, he has also previously secured a title at the New Zealand Golden Gloves.
The sanction serves as a reminder of the ongoing discussions surrounding substance use in sports, particularly concerning recreational drugs that do not enhance athletic performance. As athletes continue to navigate the complexities of regulations, this case highlights the importance of compliance with governing body rules, regardless of the context in which substances are consumed.
Drake’s future in the sport may be impacted by this ruling, but his commitment to boxing remains evident as he looks to continue his career following the completion of his sanction.
