Shubman Gill to Captain India in Upcoming ODI Series Against New Zealand
India has named a 15-member squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on January 11, 2026. Shubman Gill will take on the role of captain for the three-match series, marking a significant moment in his burgeoning career. This announcement follows reports from NDTV confirming the details of the team selection.
A notable inclusion in the squad is wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who had faced uncertainty regarding his availability. His return is expected to bolster India’s middle order significantly. In addition, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain, although his participation hinges on receiving fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE).
Fast Bowlers Miss Out
Interestingly, senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been omitted from the lineup despite recently regaining form in domestic competitions. Similarly, Jasprit Bumrah will not feature in this ODI series, as selectors have opted to experiment with a different pace attack.
The series will consist of three ODIs, after which India will engage in a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. This T20I segment is anticipated to serve as a crucial preparation phase for the 2026 T20 World Cup, providing the squad an opportunity to fine-tune their strategies and combinations.
Strategic Focus Ahead
The selection process highlights the team management’s commitment to balancing experience and fitness, especially with a demanding international calendar on the horizon. With Pant reinforcing the middle order and Iyer’s potential comeback adding depth, India aims to commence the new year with momentum against a formidable New Zealand team.
As both teams prepare for the ODI series, it is expected to attract considerable attention. They will utilize these matches not only to secure victories but also to test various combinations and build momentum before transitioning to the T20 format. The series promises to be an exciting spectacle for cricket enthusiasts, setting the stage for what lies ahead in the cricketing calendar.
