Six60 Celebrates Ranfurly Shield Tour with Community Events
The popular New Zealand band Six60 celebrated the opportunity to hold the prestigious Ranfurly Shield during a community event in Dunedin on March 15, 2024. Singer and guitarist Matiu Walters expressed his excitement, stating, “I’ve never held the Ranfurly Shield before. We’re happy for the boys and to be holding the Log o’ Wood.”
The shield has been touring various locations in the Otago region since Otago Rugby narrowly defeated Canterbury 38-36 in a thrilling match earlier this month. Fans across towns such as Milton, Balclutha, Alexandra, and Wanaka have had the chance to interact with this symbol of domestic rugby supremacy.
Community Engagement and Celebration
According to Richard Kinley, Chief Executive of Otago Rugby, bringing the shield to the community is a way to celebrate the team’s achievement. “The team’s done a fantastic job in winning the shield, and now it’s a chance for us to give back,” he said. The rugby union’s initiative aims to visit as many centres as possible, allowing fans to embrace the shield and share in the team’s success.
One particularly memorable moment occurred when the shield was presented to Forbes Knight, a 93-year-old resident of Central Otago and father of Richard Knight, who holds the record as Otago’s most-capped player. The emotional connection to the shield reinforces its significance within the community.
The excitement surrounding the shield’s tour was evident during a recent signing session at Meridian Mall, where players were taken aback by the level of interest and enthusiasm from supporters. Captain Sam Gilbert remarked on the community’s connection to the shield, noting, “It was awesome to see our biggest turnout of the year on Saturday as well.”
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Otago Rugby has plans to defend the Ranfurly Shield in the opening game of next year’s NPC season against Southland. This match will mark the 250th meeting between the two provinces and is set to take place at Forsyth Barr Stadium. Until then, the shield will continue its tour throughout the region before being secured for the summer months.
The initiative to share the shield with the community reflects a broader commitment to engage fans and celebrate the sport’s rich heritage, ensuring that the excitement of rugby resonates well beyond the field.
