Sterling Express Storms to Victory in Foxbridge Plate

Sterling Express showcased his remarkable talent by clinching victory in the Group 2 Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate on August 26, 2023, at Te Rapa. This marked the horse’s debut at the Group level, and his breathtaking last-to-first run confirmed his place among elite competitors.
The homebred son of Shamexpress, owned by Gloria Macrae and Brian McKeagg, entered the race with a solid track record, having achieved seven wins from 18 starts. Last season, he enjoyed a surge of success, including three victories as a 3-year-old and four wins in the previous season. His most recent performance prior to the Foxbridge Plate was a significant triumph in the $60,000 Winter Championship Sprinters’ Final (1400m) at Ruakākā, where he displayed an impressive finishing kick.
However, the Foxbridge Plate presented a different level of competition. Previously, Sterling Express had struggled in black-type races, finishing last in the Listed Trevor & Corallie Memorial (1500m) at Te Rapa in December 2023. The Foxbridge Plate, with a purse of $150,000, required him to face high-caliber rivals in a weight-for-age format.
The race began with challenges for Sterling Express as he was slow to leave the starting gates. He found himself at the back of the pack while the lead was being fiercely contested by horses racing near the front. The first four runners around the home turn ultimately finished in the top six positions. Lhasa took the lead after sitting alongside the front-running Sacred Satono before asserting dominance early in the straight.
As the race progressed, Sterling Express began to make his move. His jockey navigated him through the field with skill, allowing him to gain momentum and advance past his competitors. The final stretch saw Sterling Express unleash his full potential, showcasing his speed and determination.
In an exhilarating finish, he crossed the line ahead of the others, proving he can compete at the highest level. His performance not only marked a personal best but also set a promising tone for his future endeavors in horse racing. This victory in the Foxbridge Plate solidifies Sterling Express’s status as a horse to watch in upcoming events.
With this significant achievement, the connections of Sterling Express can look forward to a bright future, as the horse continues to develop and compete against top-tier opposition in the sport.
