Thieves Steal 18 Bikes from Visma Lease a Bike Before Vuelta Stage

Cycling team Visma Lease a Bike reported that a significant theft occurred just before stage three of the Vuelta a España. Several of their racing bikes were stolen from a mechanics’ truck, posing a challenge for the team as they prepared for the next leg of the prestigious Spanish Grand Tour.
On Sunday, Jonas Vingegaard claimed the red jersey as the overall leader after winning stage two, which was one of three stages taking place in Italy. However, the theft of the bikes has left Visma Lease a Bike in a difficult position as they seek to replace the stolen equipment before the 134.6-kilometre route to Ceres in the Piedmont region.
“Our mechanics’ truck was broken into last night and several bikes were stolen,” the team announced. “Our mechanics are working hard to ensure that the team is fully prepared for the third stage. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.”
According to reports from Gazzetta Dello Sport, the team lost a total of 18 bikes, with an estimated value of €250,000 (approximately $292,378). Fortunately, rival teams Movistar and Lidl-Trek, who were also staying in the same hotel near Turin, did not experience any theft of their equipment.
The incident highlights the challenges teams face not only on the road but also during downtime as they prepare for competitive stages. Visma Lease a Bike is now in a race against time to secure replacement bikes and ensure their athletes are adequately equipped for the upcoming stage.
As the investigation unfolds, the cycling community watches closely, hoping for a swift resolution that allows the team to continue their pursuit of success in the Vuelta a España.
