Top Bowlers Compete at Annual Rusty Mac Memorial Tournament

The annual Rusty Mac Memorial Pairs Tournament kicks off today at the Awamoa Bowling Club in North Otago, drawing top bowlers from across New Zealand. This event celebrates the legacy of the late Russell “Rusty” McDonald and his son, Craig McDonald, who passed away in 2019 and 2022, respectively. Since its inception in 2020 by Craig and his mother, Annie McDonald, the tournament has evolved into an important fixture marking the start of the bowling season in the region.
Annie McDonald expressed her pride in the tournament’s growth, stating, “It’s incredible to think it’s been going this long and still very popular.” This year marks the sixth iteration of the tournament, with participants arriving from as far north as Tauranga and as far south as Riverton.
Star-Studded Lineup and Community Spirit
The competition features several accomplished bowlers, including last year’s champions, Bernie Blackmun and Paul Avis from Christchurch, who are back to defend their title. Also returning are Shane Elliott of Timaru and Dion Murphy of Oamaru, both of whom claimed the 2024 Craig McDonald Plate. This year, Hamish Kelliher, a representative for New Zealand under-26, adds to the tournament’s impressive roster.
The tournament is not only a showcase of talent but also a reaffirmation of community ties. Bob Kingan, president of the Awamoa Bowling Club, noted that many bowlers eagerly return each year. “They’re always keen to keep their slots,” he remarked. The club’s greens are particularly well-regarded, with some competitors humorously suggesting they would like to take them back to Christchurch after the tournament.
Club secretary Terry Lake highlighted the unique timing of the event, stating, “The Southlanders can’t believe we’re even playing at this time of year.”
The McDonald Family’s Legacy
Kingan expressed gratitude for the dedication of the McDonald family, emphasizing their significant contribution to the success of the tournament. “The McDonald family have put a lot of work into this and we do appreciate the effort to make this event happen,” he said.
This beloved tournament not only celebrates the memory of two remarkable individuals but also fosters community spirit and camaraderie among bowlers. As the competition unfolds beginning today and continuing through to Sunday, spectators can expect an exciting display of skill and sportsmanship on the greens.
