Tributes Flow for Spurs Legend Martin Chivers Following Passing
Former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Martin Chivers has passed away, leaving behind a legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats. Chivers, who played for Spurs from 1968 to 1976, scored an impressive 174 goals in 367 first-team appearances, making significant contributions to the team’s success during that period. His remarkable career included two League Cup victories and a triumph in the UEFA Cup.
Chivers made headlines when he joined Tottenham from Southampton in 1968 for a then-record fee of £125,000 (approximately $NZ290,00022 goals until Jermain Defoe surpassed this record in 2013.
A Stellar International Career
In addition to his club success, Chivers represented England on 24 occasions, scoring 13 goals. His final international match was against Poland at Wembley Stadium in 1973, a game that marked the end of England’s hopes of qualifying for the 1974 World Cup.
The passing of Martin Chivers has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and former teammates. Tottenham Hotspur released a heartfelt statement saying, “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers. Rest in peace, Martin.
