Waikato staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Northland 25-19 in a crucial National Provincial Championship (NPC) match on September 30, 2023, securing their place in the upcoming quarterfinals. The contest, held at FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, saw Waikato overcome an early disadvantage of twelve points. This victory ensures they will finish the season in either sixth or seventh place, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

The match began with Northland taking a commanding lead, scoring two quick tries within the first 15 minutes. Waikato struggled initially but rallied, displaying resilience and determination. Youngster Malachi Wrampling made a significant impact after recovering from a yellow card, scoring a crucial try that shifted the momentum in favor of Waikato. Veteran Aaron Cruden played a pivotal role throughout, executing strategic kicks and successfully converting tries, demonstrating why he remains a key figure in the team.

In the 47th minute, Waisake Salabiau crossed the try line, putting Waikato ahead for the first time. The try followed an impressive break from co-captain Mitch Jacobson, whose pass to Salabiau raised questions about its legality but was deemed valid by referee James Doleman. Northland responded with a try from Jordan Trainor, but Cruden’s penalty goals in the 59th and 69th minutes proved decisive, allowing Waikato to maintain a narrow lead.

Despite Waikato’s attempts to secure the game with additional tries, both were disallowed due to infractions. Northland had a last-minute opportunity to equalize but failed to score, leaving them waiting on the outcome of another match to determine their playoff fate.

Northland’s team, affected by last-minute withdrawals, including first-five Rivez Reihana and second-five Reesjan Pasitoa, showed promise through debutant Jade Stewart, who excelled at No 10, amassing a game-high 103 meters. Nevertheless, they must now rely on Tasman to secure a win against Counties Manukau to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The outcome of this match is a testament to Waikato’s unpredictable season, characterized by narrow victories and a significant defeat to Bay of Plenty in prior weeks. The coaching staff, led by Ross Filipo, has faced challenges, but this win offers a much-needed boost as they progress in the tournament.

In other NPC action, defending champions Wellington’s hopes were dashed earlier in the day with a 33-26 loss to Bay of Plenty, officially concluding their title defense. Wellington’s inability to maintain a lead, allowing 26 unanswered points, leaves them finishing 10th on the ladder.

Meanwhile, Otago solidified their position at the top with a record-breaking 51-17 victory over Auckland, marking their largest win against them in history. This commanding performance keeps Otago four points ahead of Canterbury, ensuring their dominance in the standings.

As the NPC season approaches its climax, Waikato’s victory not only highlights their fighting spirit but also sets the stage for an exciting quarterfinal round, with fans eagerly anticipating the next matches in this thrilling competition.
