Warriors Women Fall to Raiders After Two Red Cards in NRLW Clash

The Canberra Raiders secured a dramatic 20-16 victory over the Warriors Women in the National Rugby League Women’s competition on March 15, 2024, marking their first win of the season. The match, held at the FMG Stadium Waikato, was significantly impacted by two red cards issued to the Warriors in the first half, transforming the game’s dynamics.
Matekino Gray received a red card for a spear tackle on Raiders prop Chloe Saunders, shortly followed by Tysha Ikenasio, who was sent off for a dangerous hip drop tackle on Monalisa Soliola. These dismissals left the Warriors with only eleven players on the field, putting them at a severe disadvantage early in the contest.
Despite the setback, the Warriors demonstrated resilience. Initially, the Raiders capitalized on their numerical advantage, quickly establishing a 12-0 lead with tries from Jordyn Preston and Sereana Naitokatoka. Soon after, MacKenzie Wiki extended the Raiders’ lead further, which left the Warriors facing an uphill battle in the rain-soaked conditions.
As the match progressed, the Warriors began to fight back. Payton Takimoana and Lavinia Tauhalaliku each scored, narrowing the scoreline. However, the Raiders responded effectively, with fullback Elise Simpson scoring a crucial try to push the lead to 20-8.
Takimoana’s impressive performance continued as she completed a hat trick, bringing the Warriors closer to a potential equalizer. Despite their late surge and strong attacking play, the Warriors struggled with goal kicking, which ultimately prevented them from leveling the score.
The Raiders managed to hold on to their lead thanks to the tactical experience of their captain, Zahara Temara, who effectively managed the closing stages of the match. The victory not only marked a significant milestone for the Raiders but also left the Warriors in sixth place on the ladder as they prepare to face the fourth-placed Sharks in Hamilton next weekend.
This match highlighted the unpredictable nature of the NRLW, where a single moment can alter the course of the game. Both teams will undoubtedly reflect on this encounter as they look to improve in the coming weeks.
