Warriors Women Suffer Upset Loss to Raiders After Two Red Cards

The New Zealand Warriors Women faced a disappointing defeat against the Canberra Raiders, losing 20-16 in a match marked by two red cards on March 9, 2024, at FMG Stadium Waikato. The loss marks the Raiders’ first victory of the season, while the Warriors remain in sixth place on the ladder.
In a dramatic first half, both Matekino Gray and Tysha Ikenasio were sent off within minutes of each other. Gray received her red card for executing a spear tackle on Raiders prop Chloe Saunders, which was followed by Ikenasio’s dismissal for a dangerous hip drop tackle on Monalisa Soliola. At that point, the Raiders already held a 12-0 lead due to tries from Jordyn Preston and Sereana Naitokatoka.
As the match progressed, the Warriors, reduced to 11 players, demonstrated resilience. They mounted a spirited comeback, with Payton Takimoana and Lavinia Tauhalaliku scoring tries either side of halftime. This brought the Warriors within striking distance, but the Raiders maintained their composure, with Elise Simpson scoring a crucial try to extend the Raiders’ lead to 20-8.
Despite Takimoana’s impressive hat trick, the Warriors struggled with goal kicking, which ultimately cost them a chance to equalize. Raiders captain Zahara Temara showcased her experience, effectively managing the game in the closing stages to secure the win for her team.
The defeat leaves the Warriors looking to regroup as they prepare to face the fourth-placed Sharks in Hamilton next weekend. The match serves as a reminder of the challenges and unpredictability of the season, particularly in a competitive league such as the NRLW.
