West Indies Stun New Zealand with Record Draw in Christchurch Test
A remarkable performance from the West Indies has resulted in a historic draw against the Black Caps in the first Test match of their series in Christchurch. Chasing an imposing target of 531 runs, the visitors achieved a world record score of 457 for 6 in their fourth innings, showcasing resilience and skill that kept their hopes alive until the final moments of the match.
The highlight of the West Indies’ innings was a defiant double-century from Justin Greaves, who scored 200 runs off 387 balls. His marathon performance was complemented by Shai Hope, who contributed 140 runs, and Kemar Roach, who remained unbeaten on 58 runs. The trio’s efforts proved crucial in denying New Zealand a victory on their home turf.
New Zealand faced challenges on the final day, with key bowlers Nathan Smith and Matt Henry unable to bowl, forcing Jacob Duffy, Michael Bracewell, and Zak Foulkes to shoulder the bowling responsibilities. Hope’s impressive innings came to an end when wicketkeeper Tom Latham took a stunning catch off Foulkes’ bowling, raising concerns for the West Indies as they neared the conclusion of the match.
Despite the setback of losing Tevin Imlach for just four runs, Roach and Greaves formed a formidable partnership, keeping the West Indies in contention for a remarkable draw. Their efforts on the pitch echoed the spirit of the team, proving that they could withstand the pressure from the New Zealand bowlers.
The second Test of this three-match series will commence in Wellington on Wednesday, where both teams will look to build on this thrilling encounter. The West Indies will aim to carry the momentum from this historic draw, while New Zealand will seek to bounce back and secure a win on home soil.
