Former Silver Ferns midcourter Whitney Souness has signed with the Sydney Giants, marking her as the eighth netballer from New Zealand to join the Australian league. This move comes after Netball New Zealand relaxed its eligibility rules, allowing more players to compete in the 2026 Suncorp Super Netball league.

On Monday, Karin Burger became the fifth Silver Fern to receive an exemption under these new rules. Alongside Souness, players like Kelly Jackson, Maddy Gordon, and Kate Heffernan are also making the transition across the Tasman. Notably, Grace Nweke is set to return for her second season, while Te Paea Selby-Rickit and Jane Watson are confirmed to play in Australia next year without needing exemptions, as they did not make themselves available for New Zealand selection.

Souness, who narrowly missed the selection for the recent 2025/26 Silver Ferns squad, expressed her excitement about joining the Giants. “I want to keep playing for a long time, but at my age, I wasn’t sure how much longer I would have this opportunity,” she stated. “The SSN offers a chance to compete against some of the best players, and I want to expand my skill set and grow my game.”

Having been with the Pulse since 2015, except for a brief period with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in 2020, Souness has been a key player for her team. The departure of Souness marks a significant loss for the Pulse, who have now seen three players leave for the Australian league. Additionally, Tiana Metuarau is also expected to leave the Wellington-based franchise, with reports indicating a potential move to the United Kingdom.

Souness acknowledged the challenges ahead as she adjusts to the rigorous demands of the Australian league. “I’m very nervous but also very excited,” she said. “This is not just about netball; it’s a life experience. Stepping out of my comfort zone is essential for growth.”

The Giants’ head coach, Nerida Stewart, praised Souness’s capabilities. “Whitney is an incredibly smart and dynamic athlete who brings a high level of international experience,” Stewart commented. “Her ability to link attack and defence while controlling tempo is exactly what we need to strengthen our midcourt.”

Souness has played a total of 136 national league matches, and she reflected on her time with the Pulse, stating, “The yellow dress has meant everything to me. It’s bittersweet to leave, but we must do what is necessary for our growth.”

In a show of support, Pulse coach Anna Andrews-Tasola highlighted Souness’s impact beyond her athletic prowess. “Whitney has been more than a player; she has been a role model and mentor, inspiring countless young athletes throughout the Central Zone, particularly in her local Porirua community.”

As Souness embarks on this new chapter in her career, the netball community looks forward to witnessing her contributions to the Giants and the broader Australian league.
