World Champions Compete for 63rd Halberg Awards in Auckland

The prestigious Halberg Awards are set to highlight New Zealand’s sporting excellence with an impressive lineup of nominees. Athletes, including Hamish Kerr and Geordie Beamish, are among the top contenders for the coveted sportsman of the year title at the 63rd Halberg Awards, scheduled for February 16, 2025, in Auckland. The event recognizes outstanding achievements in New Zealand sports over the past year.

Kerr, who recently captured a gold medal in the high jump at the world championships in Tokyo, is joined by Beamish, who made headlines with his remarkable comeback to win the 3000 metres steeplechase title after facing a significant fall in the heats. Their accomplishments are complemented by Ryan Fox, who secured two victories on the PGA Tour, Luca Harrington, who triumphed in the big air world championship in freestyle skiing, and footballer Chris Wood, who has consistently excelled for both Nottingham Forest and the All Whites.

The Halberg Awards feature a total of 32 finalists across various categories, illustrating the depth of talent in New Zealand sports. Among the nominees for sportswoman of the year are renowned snow sports athletes, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Alice Robinson, alongside Erin Routliffe, who clinched the US Open women’s doubles title, Sammie Maxwell, a world series mountainbike champion, Niamh Fisher-Black, a silver medalist at the road cycling world championships, and Jorja Miller, a standout in rugby sevens and Black Ferns.

The team of the year category features six finalists, including the victorious Black Ferns sevens rugby team, Auckland FC in football, and the world champion rowing duo of Ben Taylor and Oliver Welch. The cycling pursuit team, comprising Nick Kergozou, Tom Sexton, Keegan Hornblow, and Marshall Erwood, also earned a spot after their bronze performance at the world championships.

In the para athlete category, Lisa Adams and Danielle Aitchison lead a competitive field that includes track cyclists Nicole Murray and Devon Briggs, along with swimmer Cameron Leslie. Coach of the year finalists include James Sandilands, who guided Kerr to his world championship success, and Cory Sweeney, head coach of the Black Ferns sevens.
