Arrest Made After Shots Fired at Police in Palmerston North

Police have arrested a man following two separate incidents in which shots were fired at officers in Palmerston North. The first shooting occurred around 01:30 on Monday, when police attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Highbury Ave. The driver failed to comply, and during the pursuit, a passenger leaned out of the window and discharged a firearm, firing approximately five to six shots toward the pursuing officers. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
In response to the shooting, the Armed Offenders Squad was quickly deployed to the scene. Police successfully used road spikes, leading to the discovery of the abandoned vehicle on Chadwick Place. A firearm was also found on the road where the vehicle had traveled. Using assistance from police dogs, officers located a nearby address where a suspect was taken into custody.
This incident follows another event that took place at around 04:20 on Sunday. Police received reports about a stolen vehicle being tracked through Palmerston North. An informant indicated that a utility vehicle was following the stolen car, and both vehicles were reportedly speeding. The stolen vehicle then reversed towards a police car, leading an officer to hear what he believed to be a firearm discharge. Although no injuries occurred, a bullet hole was later found in the front of the police car, close to the headlight.
Authorities suspect that the driver of the stolen vehicle may be connected to the Monday incident. A 20-year-old man is expected to appear in the Palmerston North District Court today, facing charges for using a firearm against law enforcement as well as a warrant for outstanding driving offenses.
Superintendent Dion Bennett commented on the situation, noting that while these incidents in Palmerston North and recent events in Levin do not appear to be directly connected, police are taking a strong stance against gang-related violence. He stated, “We will use all the available powers to us, including Gang Conflict Warrants, and support from our neighbouring districts, to stamp out this violent and vile behaviour.”
Bennett emphasized the need for gangs to cease their activities, expressing concern for innocent community members who could be harmed. He acknowledged the community’s response, saying, “The help from the public in terms of providing police with information about these incidents has been outstanding, and is truly appreciated.”
The police are urging anyone with additional information regarding these incidents to come forward and assist in their ongoing investigations.
