Auckland Business Owners Demand Action on Homelessness Issues
A survey conducted by Heart of the City reveals that business owners in Auckland’s city centre are facing significant challenges due to homelessness and anti-social behaviour. Out of 102 surveyed store owners, a striking 91 percent reported that rough sleeping and begging are adversely impacting their trade. Furthermore, 72 percent expressed dissatisfaction with the cleanliness of Queen Street, a major commercial area.
Chief Executive Viv Beck has voiced strong concerns regarding the ongoing issues faced by businesses. She emphasizes that it is crucial for public by-laws to be enforced to address these problems effectively. Beck stated that the current situation is untenable and requires immediate action to support local businesses.
Challenges Affecting Trade
The survey results underline a growing frustration among business owners, who feel that the presence of homelessness and associated anti-social behaviour is deterring customers. Many store owners believe that without adequate police presence and enforcement of by-laws, their ability to operate profitably is severely compromised.
The feedback from local businesses indicates a broader concern about public safety and the image of the city centre. As Auckland continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, maintaining a welcoming environment is essential for attracting customers and supporting economic growth.
Calls for Action
Viv Beck’s call for action highlights the need for local authorities to prioritize the enforcement of existing regulations. She argues that a collaborative effort is necessary to address these issues, ensuring that both the needs of businesses and the well-being of the community are considered.
The survey findings serve as a crucial reminder of the interconnected nature of urban challenges. As Auckland’s city centre strives to revitalize its economy, addressing homelessness and anti-social behaviour will be vital in creating a thriving environment for businesses and residents alike.
The ongoing dialogue between business owners and city officials will be critical in shaping the future of Auckland’s commercial landscape, with the hope that prompt action can alleviate the concerns raised by the community.
