Australian Diamonds Claim Constellation Cup in Thrilling Finish
The Australian Diamonds edged past the Silver Ferns in a nail-biting finish to clinch the Constellation Cup, winning the decisive match 12-11 on October 7, 2023. This victory marks a significant achievement for the Diamonds as it is their first win on New Zealand soil since 2021, and it represents coach Stacey Marinkovich‘s second triumph in New Zealand since taking over as head coach.
The series decider was unique, featuring a new format that included two seven-minute halves. The Silver Ferns initially surged ahead, taking a 3-0 lead. However, the Diamonds quickly equalized and took control, leading 7-5 at halftime. As the match progressed, the Silver Ferns faced challenges with several midcourt players suffering from cramping, which led to strategic substitutions.
A pivotal moment came when Mila Reuelu-Buchanan made a critical defensive play, allowing the Silver Ferns to tie the game at 11-11. Despite this resurgence, the Diamonds maintained their composure, strategically managing the clock to secure the win with a final score of 12-11. The match concluded on a somber note as Diamonds defender Sunday Aryang appeared to sustain a serious injury.
Earlier in the series, the Silver Ferns demonstrated resilience by winning the fourth test 62-57, which set the stage for the decider. In that match, the Silver Ferns struggled in the first half, trailing 17-12 at the first break and 33-27 at halftime. The Diamonds’ shooters, Sophie Garbin and Kiera Austin, found their rhythm, efficiently working together to dominate the attacking space.
The Silver Ferns made strategic adjustments, introducing young Catherine Hall at goal defense, which revitalized their defensive play. This change, combined with Kelly Jackson‘s efforts, helped level the score at 37-37 midway through the third quarter. Maddy Gordon, who shifted to wing attack, added depth to their offensive strategy, contributing to a noticeable increase in urgency and determination from the Silver Ferns.
Despite their spirited comeback, the Diamonds demonstrated calm and composure, leading 46-43 at the break. The Silver Ferns pressed hard in the final stages, even taking a 57-51 lead, but the Diamonds weathered the storm to win the fourth test.
This latest match highlights the intense rivalry between the two teams and showcases the evolving dynamics of international netball. The Australian Diamonds now hold the Constellation Cup, a testament to their skill and determination, setting the stage for future encounters between these formidable teams.
