Authorities Urge Public to Avoid Trespassing on Phillips’ Hideouts

Authorities are warning the public against trespassing on private property linked to the recent events surrounding the death of Phillips. He lived in hiding for nearly four years before a confrontation with police led to his demise on October 9, 2023. Investigators have stated that the areas where Phillips resided remain active crime scenes, and the public should refrain from entering these locations.
Although police cordons on Te Anga Road have been lifted, officials are urging both the media and the public to respect the privacy of the site as officers continue to gather evidence. Phillips was involved in a violent incident following a burglary in Piopio, where he shot and critically injured a police officer before being fatally shot by law enforcement. The injured officer is currently receiving treatment at Waikato Hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police discovered multiple makeshift camps where Phillips and his family had been living. Items recovered from these sites include quad bikes, trail bikes, tarpaulins, oil containers, tools, and even a toilet bowl. Photographs released show tents camouflaged with netting and vegetation, providing insight into the lengths they went to remain undetected.
The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Phillips’ lifestyle, with Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders noting that the evidence suggests he may have received assistance from others during his time in hiding. This revelation raises questions about the extent of support he had while evading authorities.
In a significant development, one of Phillips’ children was detained at the scene of the incident, while two others were located unharmed later that day in dense bush nearby. Following these events, the children are now in the care of Oranga Tamariki, New Zealand’s Ministry for Children.
This situation has drawn attention to the challenges faced by law enforcement in tracking individuals who choose to live off the grid. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on ensuring that the public understands the importance of respecting the boundaries of these private properties.
The call for caution also serves as a reminder of the ongoing impact of Phillips’ actions on his family and the community. As more information becomes available, police are committed to uncovering the full story behind these recent events while ensuring the safety of all involved.
