Costumed Revelry Marks Dunedin Craft Beer & Food Festival
The Dunedin Craft Beer & Food Festival captivated attendees yesterday with its vibrant atmosphere and festive costumes. The two-day event, held at Forsyth Barr Stadium, drew an enthusiastic crowd that could reach up to 12,000 people. By the afternoon, the festival was bustling, celebrating the best of craft beer and culinary delights.
Among the attendees were Dunedin locals Toni Paterson, Stacey Hitchcock, Amy Coleman, and Courtney Smith, who showcased their creativity with a playful theme of cops and prisoners. Their choice of costume served a dual purpose. “It’s easier for everyone to find each other,” explained Ms. Paterson. For Ms. Smith, the “prisoner” of the group, the costume also served as a reminder of her responsibility as the designated driver for the event. “I draw the short straw every year, but I actually don’t mind it. You don’t have to drink to have a good time,” she stated.
Festival Highlights and Offerings
Festival director Jason Schroeder highlighted the impressive offerings this year, featuring over 150 craft brews from some of the country’s leading breweries. Attendees could also explore a diverse selection of more than 75 food vendors, all contributing to an immersive experience catering to various tastes. “We are happy to welcome new food and drink vendors this year. These additions build on our mission to provide fresh, innovative flavours alongside craft beers and a selection of wines, cider, and spirits,” Schroeder remarked.
The entertainment lineup added to the festival’s allure, featuring popular artists such as Gin Wigmore, Tiki Taane, Bootleg Rascal, CRÚDE, Francisca Griffin, and IVY. The inclusion of a silent disco provided an additional avenue for attendees to enjoy the festivities.
Community Engagement and Charitable Efforts
This year, the festival has also focused on community engagement, partnering with local charities including the Dunedin Night Shelter, KiwiHarvest, and the New Zealand Sea Lion Trust. These partnerships underscore the festival’s commitment to giving back to the community while celebrating a shared love for craft beer and food.
The Dunedin Craft Beer & Food Festival is set to wrap up early this evening, leaving attendees with memorable experiences and a renewed appreciation for local craft artisans. As the festival continues to grow, it solidifies its position as a must-visit event in Dunedin’s calendar.
