East Auckland Celebrates New Playground Opening at Barry Curtis Park
Local leaders from the Howick Local Board and representatives from Ngai Tai ki Tamaki officially opened a new children’s playground at Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, East Auckland. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks a significant enhancement to local recreational facilities, showcasing the board’s commitment to community development and youth engagement.
Community Engagement and Priorities
In his first month as a member of the Howick Local Board, Kai Zeng, who serves as deputy chairperson, emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping local policies. Zeng highlighted the diverse needs of the community, which constitutes 9.5 percent of Auckland’s population. His experiences in public administration have informed his approach to urban planning and community partnerships.
Alongside local board chairperson Bruce Kendall, Zeng engaged with the team responsible for the Ormiston Library and Community Centre project. This collaboration aims to address obstacles to timely project delivery. Additionally, Zeng participated in the monthly chair’s forum, where local leaders discussed essential regional priorities, including the City Rail Link and various recreation services.
Recently, Howick hosted an informational session on PC120 in Botany, fostering dialogue between local residents and government representatives. The board is committed to advocating for housing legislation that aligns with community needs, ensuring that local voices are heard in decision-making processes.
Support for Youth and Community Initiatives
Supporting young people is a central focus for the Howick Local Board. The board actively collaborates with various youth-centered organizations, including the Howick Youth Council, which facilitates initiatives like Adulting 101 and the Junior Youth Summit. These programs aim to empower youth by providing essential life skills and fostering civic engagement.
Other notable partnerships include Pest Free Howick, which promotes environmental education in schools, and Arts Out East, dedicated to supporting local artists and cultural projects. The board also engages with Business East Tamaki, which represents over 3,300 businesses and 2,100 property owners, to enhance community and economic development.
Zeng has personally participated in various youth initiatives, such as the Let Me Speak civic engagement panel and the Rangatahi Life Ally Workshop. These efforts demonstrate the board’s commitment to meeting youth where they are and addressing their unique needs.
To improve communication and transparency, the Auckland Council has launched a Local Boards Instagram channel to keep residents informed about community events, library programs, and transportation updates. Starting next year, the board plans to expand its outreach through face-to-face conversations at school assemblies and community gatherings.
As the Howick Local Board begins to shape its Local Board Plan 2026, community input will play a crucial role in setting priorities and determining the direction of future initiatives. Zeng invites residents to share their thoughts, underscoring the collaborative effort needed to build a vibrant future for East Auckland.
This opening event not only celebrates a new playground but also reflects the ongoing commitment of local leaders to foster a thriving community that values the contributions of all its members.
