England Ends 15-Year Ashes Test Losing Streak in Thrilling Victory
England’s cricket team achieved a significant milestone by securing their first Test victory in Australia since January 2011, breaking a 15-year losing streak in the Ashes series. Despite having already lost the series, Ben Stokes’s squad delivered a remarkable performance that delighted their dedicated fanbase. The match, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), saw England chase down a target of 165 runs, achieving victory with a combination of skill and resilience.
The day began with England facing pressure early on, having lost six wickets for just 165 runs. However, the duo of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith steadied the ship, navigating through the tense moments. The winning run was ultimately sealed with four leg byes off Mitchell Starc, adding a dramatic finish to an already electrifying contest.
Reflecting on the match, England batter Joe Root remarked on the importance of the victory, stating, “To lose the series is obviously very disappointing, but I think it was really important that we showed a lot of character for the rest of the series.” He emphasized the team’s response to the challenges they faced throughout the match.
England’s triumph did not come without its challenges. On the second day, pace bowler Gus Atkinson sustained a hamstring injury, putting England on the back foot. Australia began the day with a 46-run lead and all ten wickets intact. However, England’s bowlers capitalized on the conditions and Australian batting errors, dismissing the hosts for just 132 runs within 34.3 overs. This dramatic turnaround shifted momentum firmly in England’s favour.
The batting lineup responded effectively, with key contributions from Zak Crawley (37 runs) and Ben Duckett (34 runs), who formed a swift partnership of 51 runs at over seven runs per over. A strategic decision to promote tailender Brydon Carse to bat at number three did not pay off, as he was dismissed for six runs. Despite this, Bethell looked poised for a half-century but fell short, caught for 40 runs off 46 balls.
As the match progressed, England found themselves needing only 38 runs with six wickets in hand. Yet, the Australian bowling attack fought back. Jhye Richardson trapped Root lbw for 15 runs, and Starc took the crucial wicket of captain Stokes for just two runs, leaving England to scramble for the final runs. Nevertheless, wicketkeeper Smith (three not out) and Brook (18 not out) managed to secure the win.
Australia, who had earlier reached 61 for two, faced a sudden collapse in their batting order. After a five-wicket haul in the first innings by Josh Tongue, the Australian side lost four wickets for just 27 runs to find themselves at 98 for six at lunch. Despite a resilient effort from Steve Smith and Cameron Green, who added 31 runs together, England’s bowlers continued to apply pressure, and the tail end of Australia’s batting order crumbled, adding only 13 runs for the last three wickets.
The match concluded with a massive crowd of 92,045 in attendance, narrowly missing the day one record of 94,199. Cricket Australia faces financial implications following the swift conclusion of the Test, as the MCG, with a capacity of 100,000, looks set for a sell-out crowd on day three. The excitement surrounding this victory for England marks a pivotal moment for the team, providing a much-needed boost after a challenging series.
