Ferry Holdings Secures Deal for New Cook Strait Ferries

Ferry Holdings Limited has been designated as the preferred supplier for two new ferries that will operate on the Cook Strait. Rail Minister Winston Peters announced that a fixed price has been established for the construction of two vessels, each measuring 200 metres in length. These ferries will feature both road and rail decks, accommodating up to 1,500 passengers each.
The Chair of Ferry Holdings, Chris Mackenzie, confirmed that final negotiations are underway, with expectations that contracts will be signed by the end of this year. Mackenzie noted during an interview with Mike Hosking that a letter of intent has already been signed with the shipyard, marking a significant step toward finalizing the deal.
Negotiations and Technical Discussions Underway
Mackenzie elaborated on the current status, indicating that technical discussions have commenced prior to the signing of formal contracts. The identity of the shipyard involved in the construction will be disclosed once the contracts are finalized. This project is poised to enhance interisland transport capabilities, benefiting both passengers and businesses that rely on efficient ferry services across the Cook Strait.
The addition of these new ferries is expected to bolster the region’s transport infrastructure, providing a modern solution to the challenges of ferry travel. With the anticipated operational capacity, these vessels will play a crucial role in facilitating both passenger and freight movement between the North and South Islands of New Zealand.
As the negotiations progress, Ferry Holdings is optimistic about the timeline and aims to deliver the new ferries in alignment with the government’s expectations. The commitment to modernize and expand the ferry fleet underscores the importance of reliable transport options for the communities along the Cook Strait.
This development marks a significant milestone for Ferry Holdings, reflecting a proactive approach to meeting the growing demand for ferry services in the region. The successful completion of this project will not only enhance travel options but also contribute to the economic vitality of the areas served by these ferries.
