Fire Engulfs Mosman Marina, Sinking Superyachts Early Friday
A significant fire at The Spit Marina in Mosman, Sydney, early on September 29, 2023, resulted in the sinking of three superyachts and extensive damage to a fourth vessel. The blaze broke out shortly before 03:30 local time, prompting emergency services to respond swiftly to evacuate individuals from nearby boats.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry reported that approximately 40 firefighters were deployed to manage the situation, which inflicted damages amounting to millions of dollars. Fortunately, four people managed to escape unharmed, although a woman required treatment for smoke inhalation and was subsequently taken to hospital in stable condition.
Superintendent Dewberry highlighted the potential severity of the incident, noting the “dozens of boats and yachts” present at the marina and the number of individuals living aboard these vessels. He remarked, “There’s a lot of money, and people are living on some of these vessels as well,” indicating the significant risk of loss.
Boat owner Andrew Carr recounted his experience, stating he was awakened around 04:00 by the police urging residents to evacuate. “I got up, there’s a police officer at the door, he said: ‘Could you get off the boat? There’s been a fire on the dock,’” Carr explained. He described witnessing thick, toxic smoke and flames rapidly spreading from one vessel to another, stating, “They couldn’t put them out.”
Images from the scene captured one of the heavily charred yachts partially submerged as it sank, illustrating the destructive nature of the fire. Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the blaze, which is currently not being treated as suspicious.
The NSW Port Authority also played a crucial role in the firefighting efforts, assisting in extinguishing the flames and removing fuel and oils from the damaged boats to mitigate environmental contamination risks.
The Spit Marina, managed by d’Albora, features a variety of marine services, including boat hire and brokerage businesses, as well as restaurants. Marketed as “one of Sydney Harbour’s most prestigious boating precincts,” the marina boasts dedicated superyacht berths, attracting a high-value clientele.
David Joyce, d’Albora’s head of marketing, expressed the company’s commitment to safety and recovery following the incident. “Our priority is ensuring safety on site, supporting authorities with their investigation and clean-up, and restoring safe operations as soon as possible,” he stated. Joyce confirmed that significant resources had been deployed to assist with these efforts and minimize disruption to customers.
Normal operations at The Spit Marina are expected to resume later on Friday, providing relief to both the operators and patrons affected by the early morning chaos.
