Government Unveils Major Overhaul of Resource Management Act
The New Zealand Government is set to announce significant reforms to the Resource Management Act (RMA), with the unveiling scheduled for tomorrow. This overhaul is anticipated to be one of the most substantial reforms of the current term, aiming to address long-standing issues within the existing framework. According to the Government, the new legislation is expected to be introduced this year and passed before the 2024 election.
Alan McDonald, the Head of Advocacy at the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA), shared insights on the implications of the RMA reform during an interview with Ryan Bridge. McDonald emphasized that the current interpretation of the RMA allows individual councils to apply the regulations differently, leading to inconsistencies in planning across various regions. This variation has raised concerns among businesses and stakeholders who seek a more streamlined and effective approach to resource management.
In addressing the shortcomings of the existing RMA, McDonald pointed out that the previous system often failed to adequately protect the environment. He expressed optimism that the upcoming changes will establish a more coherent framework that balances development needs with environmental sustainability.
The EMA has consistently advocated for reforms to the RMA, highlighting the necessity for a regulatory environment that supports economic growth while ensuring responsible resource use. As the Government gears up for the announcement, industry leaders are keenly anticipating the specifics of the proposed changes and their potential impact on businesses and communities.
With the pressure of the upcoming election, the Government’s commitment to passing this legislation reflects its recognition of the importance of resource management in New Zealand’s development strategy. The details of the reform will be closely scrutinized, and stakeholders from various sectors are preparing to engage with the new policies as they unfold.
The EMA’s advocacy efforts underline the critical need for collaboration between government and industry to create a sustainable future for New Zealand’s natural resources. As the announcement approaches, both businesses and environmental advocates await clarity on how the new RMA will shape the landscape of resource management in the country.
