Heavy Rain Triggers Road Closures as Avalanche Risk Rises
Heavy rain and potential thunderstorms are set to increase the risk of avalanches in the area, prompting the closure of State Highway 94. The road will be closed from East Gate (Hollyford) to Donne River (Westgate) starting at 17:00 on March 15, 2024. This decision comes as part of precautions taken by local authorities to ensure public safety amid worsening weather conditions.
According to the Milford Road Alliance, the highway is expected to reopen by mid-morning on Friday, once the snowpack has adequately drained and safety inspections have been completed. The restrictions on travel are due to forecasts predicting ongoing heavy rainfall throughout the week, further complicating road conditions in the mountainous region.
While the highway is likely to remain open into the weekend, the persistent rain raises concerns about avalanches, particularly with additional snowfall anticipated on Monday. Travelers are urged to remain cautious and heed advisories from local authorities regarding road safety and possible delays.
As weather patterns continue to shift, the region is not only facing challenges from heavy rain but also the implications of fluctuating temperatures on snow stability. The Milford Road Alliance has emphasized the importance of monitoring conditions closely and will provide updates as necessary to ensure the safety of all road users.
