Joshua Driver Charged in Fatal Lagos-Ibadan Crash
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, a 46-year-old driver, has been charged in connection with a fatal car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Kayode appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 5, 2024, where he faced four charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, as confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command.
According to police statements, the court proceedings have been adjourned until January 20, 2024. Kayode was granted bail set at 5 million naira (approximately $6,070 NZD) with two sureties, but he remains in custody pending the fulfillment of these conditions.
The accident occurred on Monday when Kayode’s Lexus SUV collided with another vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Preliminary investigations conducted by the Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that speeding and a wrongful overtaking maneuver led to the crash, which ultimately struck a stationary truck.
Meanwhile, Joshua, a 36-year-old British-Nigerian boxer, sustained minor injuries in the incident. He was taken to the hospital for evaluations after the crash but is reported to be in stable condition, according to his promoter, Matchroom Boxing. Joshua was involved in the accident shortly after his recent victory over American social media star Jake Paul, where he secured a knockout in the sixth round during a fight in Miami.
The incident has drawn public attention, and President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences to Joshua and the families of the deceased, describing the event as a “tragic accident.” Joshua is expected to participate in a highly anticipated match against fellow British boxer Tyson Fury later this year.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the circumstances surrounding the crash and its implications for road safety in the region.
