Kiwi Boxer David Nyika Wins Points Decision, Dedicates Fight to Fiancée
New Zealand boxer David Nyika secured a unanimous points victory over Chinese fighter Wuzhati Nuerlang in Gatton, Queensland, on March 25, 2023. This win marks a significant return for Nyika, improving his professional record to 12 wins and 1 loss. The bout not only showcased his boxing skills but also served as an emotional tribute to his fiancée, Lexy Thornberry, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for head and neck cancer.
A Fight with Personal Significance
Nyika, 30, expressed his profound dedication to Thornberry following the fight, which was held in their adopted hometown. She was unable to attend due to her treatment but remained a central figure in Nyika’s motivation during the match. “Lexy, I love you,” he stated, visibly emotional. “You have been my inspiration, you have been my source of strength and courage. We’ll get through this together.”
In a contest that went the full ten rounds, Nyika dominated each segment, winning every round according to the judges. Despite his clear advantages in height, reach, and speed, he was unable to deliver the knockout blows that would have decisively ended the match earlier. Nyika acknowledged the resilience of Nuerlang, who managed to withstand the pressure and showcased determination despite being outclassed.
Reflecting on Challenges and Future Goals
Nyika admitted that the past six weeks have been particularly challenging due to Thornberry’s health struggles. His victory is not just a testament to his boxing prowess but also a reflection of his commitment to supporting his fiancée through her difficult journey. “To the Thornberry family, putting this event together, this is for Gatton. It’s important for me to go home now and appreciate my woman,” he noted.
While Nyika’s performance may not have been the definitive statement he had hoped for, it did demonstrate his ability to go the distance against a determined opponent. This bout was significant for Nyika, as it marked the first time he has competed beyond the fifth round in his professional career.
As he looks forward to future challenges in the cruiserweight division, Nyika remains focused on balancing his boxing ambitions with personal responsibilities. The support from his community and his unwavering dedication to Thornberry will undoubtedly guide him in the rounds ahead.
