Littler Dominates Van Veen to Secure Back-to-Back World Darts Title
Nathan Littler clinched his second consecutive world darts title with a commanding performance against Gian Van Veen in a best-of-13-sets final held in London on March 30, 2024. Despite dropping the opening set, the 18-year-old quickly regained his focus, executing relentless scoring that left Van Veen struggling to respond. Littler’s victory, by a scoreline of 7-1, not only earned him the prestigious title but also the impressive prize of £1 million (approximately $NZ2.3 million).
This win marks Littler’s place in history as the first player to achieve back-to-back world titles since Scotland’s Gary Anderson accomplished the feat in 2016. Throughout the match, Littler showcased his skill with multiple 180s and high checkouts, maintaining an impressive level of play that rarely wavered. The only disruption came when a wasp briefly interrupted the game, but this minor incident did little to affect Littler’s concentration.
Turning Point in the Match
The match took a notable turn when Van Veen, aged 23, initially appeared poised to challenge Littler. After trailing in the first set, he capitalized on a missed double by Littler to take the lead. Van Veen then surged ahead in the second set, executing checkouts of 145 and 127. A missed chance at a 127 checkout that could have extended his advantage turned out to be pivotal. From that moment, the momentum shifted decisively in favor of Littler.
While Van Veen managed to secure a leg in the eighth set, Littler’s focus remained unwavering. He entered a remarkable phase of play, winning nine consecutive legs, necessitating a replacement of the dartboard after Van Veen inadvertently cut his hand, leaving a small mark on the surface. As the match progressed, Littler sealed his triumph with a spectacular 147 checkout, demonstrating his dominance in the final stages of the contest.
Post-Match Reflections
In his post-match remarks, Littler expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “The first set I wasn’t happy but I kicked on from there and said to myself give it time and you’ll find it, and it all went to plan.” He also acknowledged Van Veen’s skill, saying, “Credit to Gian, he’s had a great tournament. He was there every set, so I had to take my chances.”
Van Veen, who reached his first world championship final after defeating Anderson, displayed moments of brilliance but ultimately could not sustain his early momentum. The match served as a testament to Littler’s extraordinary talent and composure under pressure, solidifying his status as a leading figure in the world of darts. As the tournament concludes, fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how Littler will build on this success in future competitions.
