Local Man Tackles 30 Marathons in November for Movember
A local resident in Queenstown has embarked on an ambitious challenge: running a marathon each day for the entire month of November to raise funds for the men’s health initiative, Movember. Known as Brownie, the 30-year-old ultramarathon and Hyrox competitor was inspired by fellow members of the Industrial Fitness gym, which organizes a fundraising challenge annually for the campaign.
Brownie celebrated his milestone birthday on November 1, 2023, and saw the challenge as a fitting way to welcome his thirties. “I thought I’d try and get involved … I’m turning 30, so I thought, ‘what better way to bring in your 30s than 30 marathons?’” he remarked. With November comprising 30 days, the timing worked perfectly for his plan.
The challenge entails running a total of over 1,260 km throughout the month, which Brownie anticipates will test him both mentally and physically. Each marathon stretches to 42.2 km, and he typically completes his runs in the mornings before reporting to his job at his family’s 86-year-old mattress business. His role as manager allows him some flexibility in working hours, which is critical for fitting in the daily runs.
Since beginning his challenge on November 1, Brownie has enjoyed favorable weather. However, he is prepared to shift to the gym for treadmill sessions should the conditions turn unfavorable. “I’m keeping it nice and slow, so the body doesn’t blow up too early,” he explained. He also noted that while he feels the impact on his joints in the mornings, they seem to recover once he starts running. Remarkably, he has yet to experience any blisters.
Having moved to Queenstown approximately 18 months ago, Brownie appreciates the active lifestyle the region offers. He frequently runs hill trails with his dog and participates in various events, including the Arrowtown Backyard Ultra, Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon, and the Northburn 100.
Next week, he will participate in the Queenstown Marathon, marking the halfway point of his Movember mission. As of now, donations are approaching his initial fundraising target of $5,000, prompting him to consider raising his goal to $10,000.
Brownie’s dedication highlights the spirit of community and health awareness during the Movember campaign, which aims to improve men’s health globally. His journey not only raises funds but also brings attention to the importance of mental and physical wellness as he navigates this demanding challenge.
