A man faces charges after allegedly swallowing a Fabergé locket valued at over $33,500 during a theft at a jewellery store in Auckland. Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 15:30 on September 29, 2023, when the theft occurred at the store located in the city centre.
The accused, a 32-year-old man, reportedly picked up the Fabergé James Bond Octopussy Egg pendant and ingested it in an attempt to evade capture. Court documents indicate that the pendant, priced at $33,585, is made from 18-carat yellow gold and is adorned with 60 white diamonds and 15 blue sapphires. Notably, the pendant features a golden octopus with eyes set in two black diamonds.
Rapid Response and Arrest
Officers from the Auckland City Beat team arrived on the scene within minutes. They apprehended the man and charged him with theft. Following his arrest, he appeared in Auckland District Court last week and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to reappear in court on October 2, 2023.
According to RNZ, the police confirmed that the pendant has not yet been recovered. As investigations continue, authorities are working to locate the stolen jewellery and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This case highlights the lengths to which individuals may go when attempting to commit theft, as well as the swift response of law enforcement in ensuring public safety. Further updates on the case are expected following the upcoming court appearance.
