Man Walks 40km Through Mud After Car Gets Stuck in Queensland
A man in his 40s undertook an arduous trek of nearly 40 kilometers through thick mud after his vehicle became bogged down in a remote area of northwest Queensland on October 1, 2023. Rescuers from LifeFlight, a medical helicopter service, successfully located him despite challenging conditions.
The man’s ordeal began late on Sunday when his car became trapped in mud approximately 140 kilometers south of Hughenden. LifeFlight helicopter pilot Andrew Caldwell reported that the man was found in a flood-affected region, holding a “flat” mobile phone and showing signs of exhaustion. “He had no shoes, no water, no food. He just looked absolutely exhausted,” Caldwell remarked. “You could tell on his face that he was sick of walking.”
The LifeFlight team faced initial difficulties in their search, located around 500 kilometers from their base in Mount Isa. Caldwell explained that the crew first attempted to reach the coordinates where the man was last reported but found no sign of him. “The road was very much deserted. It was closed in both directions,” he added.
After discovering the man’s vehicle, the team began to track his footprints in the saturated terrain. Caldwell described the conditions: “The whole area is completely saturated, and the black soil is just thick, heavy mud, sort of ankle to almost knee-deep in some places.” Despite the challenging environment, the team spotted foot tracks leading south and decided to follow them.
As their fuel reserves dwindled, the crew faced a decision about whether to continue. They persevered, encouraged by the discovery of what appeared to be a star picket down the road. It turned out to be the man they were searching for. “I think the crew was mainly gobsmacked that this gentleman achieved 38 kilometers walking through basically mud the whole way,” Caldwell said.
Remarkably, the man was able to walk to the helicopter, where he received medical attention. He was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment of dehydration. The successful rescue highlights not only the determination of the individual but also the resilience of the LifeFlight team in navigating difficult conditions to bring him to safety.
