Melbourne Victory Crush Wellington Phoenix 5-1 in A-League Clash
In a stunning display at AAMI Park on March 25, 2024, Melbourne Victory overwhelmed Wellington Phoenix with a decisive 5-1 victory. The match marked a new low for the Phoenix, who not only suffered their heaviest defeat of the season but also saw their captain, Alex Rufer, leave the pitch due to injury.
This loss pushed Wellington down to tenth place in the A-League Men standings, raising questions about the future of coach Giancarlo Italiano. The defeat comes just after a promising 3-1 win against Central Coast Mariners, highlighting the inconsistency that has plagued the team this season.
Victory striker Nikos Vergos was the standout performer, netting a hat-trick – his first in 40 A-League appearances. The opening goal came in just the seventh minute when Vergos capitalized on poor defending to score with a header, assisted by Nishan Velupillay. The Phoenix’s only response came from Ramy Najjarine, who equalized in the 29th minute after a defensive error from Jason Davidson, allowing him to shoot past goalkeeper Jack Duncan.
The match quickly shifted momentum back in Victory’s favor shortly before halftime. Vergos struck again in the 42nd minute, restoring Victory’s lead with another header, and completed his hat-trick just after the break with a well-placed right-footed shot from near the penalty spot.
The Phoenix’s struggles continued when Brazilian winger Clarismario Santos added to the tally in the 55th minute. A misplayed pass from Najjarine allowed Santos to convert a quick attack, showcasing Victory’s clinical finishing. Although Santos found the net again later in the match, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review revealed an offside in the buildup.
Adding to Phoenix’s woes, captain Rufer limped off with a suspected knee injury, leaving the team in a precarious position ahead of their upcoming match against Brisbane Roar. The team’s doctor quickly assessed Rufer, and his status for the next game remains uncertain, particularly with the tight schedule ahead.
Victory wrapped up the scoring in the dying minutes of the match when Keegan Jelacic rounded the young Phoenix goalkeeper, Eamonn McCarron, to secure the comprehensive victory. This win marked Victory’s largest triumph over the Phoenix since a 6-1 victory in 2016.
As the Phoenix prepare to face the third-placed Brisbane Roar in Redcliffe on Saturday, they will be hoping for a swift recovery for Rufer and a return to form for their starting goalkeeper, Josh Oluwayemi. The upcoming match will be crucial as they seek to regain their footing in the league.
