New Plymouth Operatic Society Nominated for Taranaki Daily News Award
The New Plymouth Operatic Society (NPOS) has been recognized as one of five finalists for the Taranaki Daily News Person of the Year 2025. This nomination celebrates nearly 75 years of the society’s contributions to the cultural landscape of Taranaki, New Zealand, where it has engaged with countless individuals through performances, volunteer opportunities, and community involvement.
Since its inception in 1952, NPOS has built a legacy involving approximately 350 volunteers each year, who participate in various productions, including the annual Christmas cabaret and a series of junior shows. The society also rents out costumes and attracts thousands of attendees to its performances, with the major annual show alone drawing around 10,000 viewers. In 2022, the production of Matilda set a record with an impressive 14,000 attendees.
This nomination is particularly significant as it acknowledges the collective efforts of all individuals who have contributed to the society over the years. Shaun Murphy, the society’s president and a third-generation leader, emphasized the importance of recognizing both current and past members. “It’s a tribute to those who have made this society what it is today, including those no longer with us,” he stated.
The society’s evolution has been noteworthy. In 1971, when the production of Oliver attracted nearly 200 auditions with tickets priced at just $2, the standards of performance were quite different. Murphy reflects on how audience expectations have shifted dramatically over the decades, requiring the society to adapt and innovate. “We’ve reached a level where I would say we’re the closest to pro-am that you could possibly get without being pro-am,” he explained.
A pivotal moment in the society’s history came in the 1970s, when members united to save the New Plymouth Opera House, now known as the TSB Showplace. Murphy points out that this effort underscored the vital role of the performing arts in the community, despite a lack of support from local authorities at that time. The members purchased the building, preserved it from demolition, and later returned it to the council, showcasing their commitment to cultural heritage.
As the TSB Showplace approaches its centenary in 2024, NPOS plans its upcoming main production, titled The One Hundred, which will celebrate music and performances from throughout the venue’s history. The creative team is currently delving into the archives to curate an engaging showcase of the venue’s rich past.
In addition to its major productions, NPOS is marking a significant milestone with its annual Christmas cabaret, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year. General manager Christopher Luke shared that the society has also introduced junior theatre programming, which is currently scheduled for every second year. Past productions like Seussical JR and the recent Wendy Junior, a New Zealand adaptation of Peter Pan, have been well received, with plans to evaluate the potential for annual junior theatre productions moving forward.
Approximately 25% of the cast and crew for each major production are first-time participants, reflecting NPOS’s commitment to fostering new talent and providing a diverse experience for both audiences and volunteers. Luke commented on the positive community response following the pandemic, stating, “We’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well the shows have gone, which is simply a reflection of how well we are supported by the community.”
The recognition of the New Plymouth Operatic Society as a finalist for the Taranaki Daily News Person of the Year highlights not only the society’s storied history but also its ongoing impact on the cultural and social fabric of Taranaki. As the society prepares for future productions, it remains a vital community resource, inspiring new generations through the performing arts.
